If you’re pregnant in 2026, chances are you’ve already started thinking about the things you don’t want to miss.
Newborn photos often sit quietly on that list. Something you know matters, but aren’t quite sure when to organise.
As a newborn photographer working with families across Sydney, this is one of the questions I’m asked most often:
When is the right time to book newborn photos?
The answer is simpler than most people expect.
Based on the way newborn photography actually works in practice, the best time to book your newborn photos is before your baby arrives, ideally during your second trimester.
I recommend this not because parents need to “lock something in”, but because newborn sessions are planned around due dates, not specific calendar days. Space is held, then adjusted once your baby is here.
This approach allows me to give families the time, flexibility and care these early days deserve.
Why I Encourage Families to Book Earlier Than They Expect
Many parents assume newborn photos are organised once the baby has arrived. In reality, most photographers in Sydney book months in advance.
As a newborn photographer working with families across Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, North Shore, Hills District and Western Sydney, I see this pattern consistently.
Booking early means:
your due date is prioritised
flexibility is built in if your baby arrives early or late
one meaningful decision is taken off your plate
When Newborn Photos Are Usually Taken
The traditional window for newborn photography is within the first 7–14 days after birth.
During this time, babies are often:
sleepier
more naturally curled
easier to photograph in a relaxed, baby-led way
This is when I’m able to quietly capture the details parents often tell me they’re afraid of forgetting. Fingers. Toes. Expressions. The way your baby fits into your arms in those first days.
That said, I always remind families that this window is a guide, not a rule.
Can You Still Book Newborn Photos If Your Baby Is Older?
Yes — and I say this often to reassure parents who worry they’ve missed the “perfect” window.
While the first two weeks are ideal for very sleepy newborn images, beautiful photographs can still be created beyond that time.
If you’ve already had your baby and are looking for a Sydney newborn photographer, it’s always worth reaching out to ask because you have not missed out.
Why In-Home Newborn Photography Takes the Stress Out
All of my newborn sessions take place in your home, and I see the difference this makes every week.
There’s no packing up a tiny baby.
No racing out the door.
No settling into an unfamiliar space.
Instead, I come to you.
I photograph your family in the place where this chapter began. Where you’re already feeding, settling, resting and finding your rhythm. Your baby stays warm and comfortable, and we move entirely at their pace.
Sessions are baby-led and unhurried, with time for feeds, cuddles and pauses whenever they’re needed. My role is not to direct or manage, but to hold space and document what these early days feel like.
For many families, this alone makes the experience feel gentler.
When I Recommend Enquiring If You’re Expecting in 2026
As a general guide, I recommend enquiring about newborn photography once you're in your second trimester or between 16 and 24 weeks pregnant.
This allows space to:
ask questions
understand the process
feel confident your due date is accounted for
Families across Sydney often tell me that booking early brings a sense of calm long before their baby arrives.
A Final Thought
Those early days pass whether you photograph them or not.
Booking newborn photos early simply gives you the option to remember them with tenderness later.
